The former town hall consists of two different buildings: the old and new town hall. The oldest part, the 'Old Town Hall' built in the period 1345-1350, was traditionally the seat of the city council. The meetings were literally ushered in with the help of a clock, which is still present in the onion-shaped turret at the rear of the building. Most of this Town Hall was rebuilt in 1545, after a fire had almost completely destroyed it in 1543. This part of the building houses the famous Alderman's Hall from the 14th century, where the aldermen of the city council have spoken justice about the inhabitants of Kampen for centuries. At the back of the Schepenzaal is the fireplace that was built by Colijn de Nole.
