Aardenburg, originating as a Roman-imperial foundation, has existed for nearly two thousand years. There was a large fort for a thousand soldiers with a nearby village, where bakers, butchers, and merchants lived alongside the families of the soldiers. In the Middle Ages, Aardenburg was a substantial, bustling, and noisy Flemish port city. In the streetscape: murals with historical scenes, a milestone, mosaics, ornate signboards... Along the way, you will undoubtedly encounter a model of the Roman fort and the Roman gateway that stands at the same spot where it was built nearly two thousand years ago. Remarkable is also the poetic walk featuring 20 Latin poems by famous Roman authors (with Dutch translation).
