The Dalem gate in the city of Gorinchem, in the Dutch province of South Holland, is the only remaining city gate of the original four that the fortified city counted after the improvement of the ramparts that was completed in 1609. The other three were the Pulpit Gate, the Arkel Gate, and the Water Gate; These have been demolished to make room for the growing traffic. The Dalempoort still functions today as a protection mechanism in case of high water by means of a denomination, which can be closed as part of the New Dutch Water Line.
