Around the year 1000, writings from the Abbey of Reims already mention viticulture in the vicinity of Meerssen. Here, the subsoil consists of loess, with a layer of gravel underneath and finally the Limburg marl. In Champagne, Alsace, and around the Moselle, you will find the same soil structure.
