Bas Maters - Arnhem, 2000
The floating boulder was installed in 2000 as part of the land development project "Marshoek-Hoonhorst. This striking landmark with its slope fits in nicely with the slightly sloping Vechtdal landscape and is beautifully complemented by the sheep wandering here. Bas Maters himself calls his creation a primal thing: a huge boulder that balances on a crooked column element, as seen in ancient ruins. The primordial thing is built around a steel construction that goes no less than seventeen meters into the ground. No exaggerated construction, because the total weight of the boulder is about thirty tons!
