The Canadian War Cemetery, located on the Sallandse Heuvelrug near Holten, is one of the most impressive memories of the 2nd World War in this area. In the spring of 1945 it was mainly Canadian troops who, after 5 years of oppression, ensured the liberation of the North and East of the Netherlands. The soldiers who died in these actions were initially buried scattered throughout the area. It was determined by the commander of the 2nd Canadian Army, Lt. General G. G. Simonds, that the Holterberg could provide a suitable resting place for his fallen compatriots. Through the then mayor of Holten and the Ministry of War, it was arranged that a piece of the Netherlands could be donated to the Canadian Government for this purpose. The cemetery is still a piece of Canadian territory. In the Canadian cemetery, 1355 Canadians, 36 Britons, 2 Australians and 1 Belgian found their final resting place.
