The Wierdense Veld is located between Nijverdal and Wierden, and has an area of 440 hectares. It is a depression between the high moraine of the Hellendoornse Berg and the Holterberg, and the low moraine of Wierden and Hoge Hexel. Once a wet area, where the raised bog could grow continuously. In the meantime, large parts of the area have dried up and Veluwe Heide sheep have been deployed to fight against the pipe straw. With shepherd Maarten-Willem Volkers, more than 300 sheep cross the moor from mid-May to September to graze away the pipe straw. Young birches usually leave them; Removing them remains human work. Always a nice sight to take a look at the sheepfold.
