The Boetelerveld nature reserve, located between Raalte and Haarle, with an area of 170 hectares, is home to the only remnant of the vast, moist heaths of Salland. The area consists partly of forest, interspersed with open spaces and moist heathlands. Here and there in the landscape you can still find silent witnesses of the attempts that have been made to make the area suitable for agriculture. An oak, a hawthorn and a pine standing together somewhere; the combination is so unusual that it is probably the plantation of one of the three farms that once stood in the Boetelerveld. This is what the whole of Salland must have looked like until the end of the nineteenth century. A beautiful walking route through this area can be downloaded from the website www.landschapoverijssel.nl .
