Around 1100, people lived in the area that is now known as the 'Grote Veenpolder', but it was not until the Middle Ages that habitation really took off. Houses (let's call them huts) were built, usually in groups together. Scherpenzeel is the central village of the Grote Veenpolder. Peter Stuyvesant, the founder of one of the most important cities in the world, New Amsterdam (now New York), was raised here.
