The lake owes its name to the drowned village of Beulake. The Beulakerwijde is a relatively young lake. It has only been around for 230 years. Beulakerwiede, Boolakker, Boelake, Boelaxer, Bodelaeke, Beulsakker, Bodehaecke, Beulakerwijde. They are all names of an impressive lake that people used to speak of with great awe. At that time, people had no other tools than the oars, punt boom or punt sail to cross the large lake.
