Around Steenwijkerwold, the construction of tree hedges was the method to keep livestock on their own pastures. In these high sandy soils, the use of ditches as fencing was not worthwhile due to the rapid drainage of water into the ground or to lower-lying areas. Many of these tree hedges have remained in this area.
