The Sint Jansklooster was a convent in the Land van Vollenhove, which was destroyed during the siege of Steenwijk in the Eighty Years' War. The place name Sint Jansklooster still reminds of this former monastery.
The monastery on the Sint Janskamp near Vollenhove was founded in 1399 by the blind monk Johannes van Ommen. Van Ommen had become blind at a young age as a result of an eye disease. He was attracted to the doctrine of Modern Devotion, which was preached by Geert Grote. Initially, Van Ommen settled in Zwolle with a number of fellow believers. Because Van Ommen feared that he would not have enough space to realize his ideas, he looked for a new location for him and his fellow brothers. He found a suitable place in the vicinity of Vollenhove. There he founded a monastery, effectively a convent, and joined the Tertiaries, who lived by the Third Rule of Francis of Assisi. At Vollenhoven a similar convent, Clarenberg, was founded for women. During Van Ommen's lifetime, the convent flourished. During the Eighty Years' War, the monastery was destroyed during one of the sieges of the Steenwijk fortress. Only part of the wall remains. The memory of the monastery lives on in the name of the place, which originated near this place, St. John's Monastery.
