You cycle through the Wieden-Weerribben National Park. The Wieden is one of the most special wetland areas in Europe. The nature reserve was formed by peat extraction, so to speak. This process began around the 13th century in the Wieden, and quite clumsily. As a result, the remaining land (the reclamation areas and poor soils) became prey to streams and floods. What remained were the lakes. Ponds that have been created through peat extraction are called 'Wieden' in this region. The most famous are the Beulaker, Belter, and Bovenwijde.
