Vous pédalez à travers le Parc National de Wieden-Weerribben i.o. Les Wieden font partie des zones marécageuses (Wetlands) les plus particulières d'Europe. La zone naturelle est née de l'extraction de tourbe, en gros. Ce processus a commencé vers le 13ème siècle dans les Wieden, et de manière assez désordonnée. C'est pourquoi la terre restante (les terres agricoles et les terrains pauvres) est devenue la proie des cours d'eau et des inondations. Ce qui restait était des lacs. Les étangs formés par l'extraction de tourbe sont appelés 'Wieden' dans cette région. Les plus connus sont les lacs Beulaker, Belter et Bovenwijde.
