The history of this area begins in the late 11th and early 12th centuries when the horsten (heights) along the Reest are first inhabited. Due to the expansion of the Zuiderzee, people sought higher ground. The hamlet, located in the vicinity of Zwartsluis, which we still know today as the Zwartewaterklooster, and the surrounding area then becomes populated. The area receives a tremendous boost when the Mariënberg monastery, also known as the Zwartewaterklooster, is founded in 1233 as penance for Bishop Otto II van der Lippe, who died in the battle of Ane (an earlier ancestor of Prince Bernhard). After the Reformation in the 18th century, the monastery was dissolved and demolished.
