Castle Ruurlo is mentioned as early as 1326 and has been in the hands of the Dutch noble family Van Heeckeren since the 15th century. From the 1980s, it served as the town hall of Ruurlo. Due to the merger with Borculo, Eibergen, and Neede in 2005, it lost its purpose. In 2013, Hans Melchers purchased the castle and landscape park and had it thoroughly restored. Since 2017, it has been part of museum MORE.
Because construction was continuously carried out on the castle in all the preceding centuries, the building consists of a mix of architectural styles. Medieval masonry still exists, particularly in the basement. Almost the entire left side of the house is from the 16th century, with the large square tower getting its current shape in 1572. The "separate" tower at the back was added at the beginning of the 17th century, with the wall on this side being provided with new gable tops in the 19th century.
