During the Reformation, the Catholic inhabitants of Zieuwent worshipped in the baroque St. Francis Church in Zwillbrock or the Cross Chapel in Hemden, both located just across the border in the Münsterland. Still later, people in Harreveld went to the stasy church on the manor. In 1795 a station church was established in Zieuwent. That church was extended in 1837. In 1842 a new church, a so-called water state church, was consecrated. Already a few decades later this church had become too small and the current church was built.
