The whole of Heerlen is digging! The project will start on Sunday 18 June, during the National Archaeology Days. On this day, all kinds of fun activities are organized for young and old. Are you coming too?
The oldest building in the Netherlands, the Night Watch of archaeology in the Netherlands. The oldest stone building in the Netherlands is located in Heerlen. This honour belongs to the local Roman bathhouse, as thorough scientific research proves. It was built between 63 and 73 AD.
In addition, the surrounding location of the bathhouse, Coriovallum, was more important than previously assumed. These and many other results have now come to light. A historic milestone, says the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.
The Roman bathhouse in Heerlen, although battered, is the heart of the local Thermenmuseum. It has been meticulously researched in recent years, as have numerous Roman finds around the complex.
This was done by a team of thirty scientists from the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium. This is rare in Roman historiography of the Netherlands, according to Thermenmuseum curator Karen Jeneson.
Unique. The first copies of the book The Roman Bathhouse in Heerlen have been distributed. The book gives young and old a fascinating insight into life in this thriving city, against the background of the turbulent history of the Netherlands in Roman times.
For civilians and military personnel from all over the region, it became an important meeting place. Until now it was thought that the bathhouse was built at the beginning of the second century, but it is now certain that it was built in the first century of the Common Era. In any case, by the year zero, there was already habitation.
And there is much more: the museum offers, among other things, all kinds of changing exhibitions. Here you will discover how life in South Limburg changed completely with the arrival of the Romans 2,000 years ago. Changes that are still visible in the environment and in the traditions in 2021.
A piece of culture, transferred from the Romans to Heerlen and the surrounding area. Immerse yourself in the world of the Romans and visit the Night Watch of Dutch archaeology! Visit the Heerlen Roman Bathhouse and be impressed by the ingenuity, strength and cleverness of the Romans. Come and have a look! In the time of then and now!
For sale is the book The Roman Bathhouse in Heerlen by Karen Jeneson in the Thermenmuseum and renowned bookstores in the Netherlands!
