The Drowned Land of Saeftinghe is a vast salt marsh area in the Western Scheldt. It is located about 50 kilometers as the crow flies from the mouth. The Westerschelde is a mixing area of seawater and river water. The water that flows into the salt marsh channels at high tide is therefore brackish. With its 3200 hectares, Het Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe is one of the most important and largest salt marshes in the Netherlands. Saeftinghe is special because of its vastness and its nature, but also because it gives an image of the Zeeland primeland: a land of mudflats, plates, and salt marshes intersected with gullies. For example, you can still see how the entire delta landscape is formed here on a daily basis.
