The Harderbos is a forest in the municipalities of Dronten and Zeewolde, near the Veluwemeer. It is located near the hamlet of Harderhaven opposite Harderwijk. In addition to forest, it includes swamps, grassland and puddles. The Hoge Dwarsvaart canal runs through the forest.
The Harderbos is built on the nutrient-rich, moist sea clay soil of Flevoland. In 1968 the first poplars were planted. Since that time, the forest has been deliberately feralized. The organization Natuurmonumenten aims to create new nature, which becomes more beautiful, varied and larger over time. Due to the fertile clay soil, the forest develops rapidly. Dead trees remain and therefore form a food source and habitat for plants, mushrooms and insects.
