The Town Hall was built in three phases between 1983 and 1997. The first part was put into use in 1985, but soon proved too cramped. In 1987 an extension followed, in the form of a wing to the existing overbuilding of the Frankrijklaan. The first parts were built in a sober and efficient style designed by municipal architect Frans de Man.
The third extension from 1995-1997 is dominated by the sixteen-storey tower visible from afar, built in a very hard white stone, combined with dark glass. This design is by Groosman Partners with Ron Forrer as project architect. The facades of the oldest part of the Town Hall, which were initially executed in a dark brown brick, were painted white and gray to better match the new part.
