The esker van Langeveen is a unique geologic element in the Netherlands. It is a relic of a glacier. Under a glacier are numerous meltwater tunnels through which a slurry of sand, clay, gravel and water is spewed. When the glacier melts, that mixture of sand and gravel is left behind like a ridge. All this happened in the penultimate ice age when the polar ice came here. This is the only known esker in the Netherlands. Much of the esker has been eroded. On top of the esker there is a heathland that is lined with forest.
