The northern peat colonies are settlements that arose because workers moved to an area where raised bog was excavated for peat production. These are prevalent in the region east of Groningen and Drenthe. Here lay the Bourtange moor, which was cultivated from around 1600. The majority of peat colonies are characterized by their elongated position along a canal or road with ribbon development, from where the reclamation began.
