About 5000 years ago, the coast of Friesland was bordered by beach ridges. Behind them, large peat marshes formed. Due to the rising sea levels, the sea intruded into the land, washed away the peat, and deposited marine clay and sand in these places. Very typical of this type of landscape is the great openness and the billiard-flat terrain.
