The Wieringermeer Polder is located 2.5 to 5m below sea level or the Amsterdam Ordnance Datum (NAP). The soil in this polder was deposited in and around the shallow Zuiderzee. It consists mainly of low-calcium clay and tidal deposits. The result is a typical sea clay landscape with open, treeless field boundaries. In recently plowed fields, you can sometimes see the creek patterns from when this was still a shallow sea and tidal flat. This landscape is one of the youngest landscapes in Europe. The Wieringermeer was only reclaimed in 1930.
