River dunes were formed because during colder periods, the polar caps froze, resulting in a lower sea level. The subsequent effect was that many river valleys dried up and the sandy deposits in those valleys began to drift. This phenomenon can still be observed in the donks, or the elevated river dunes, near Bergambacht. You can also find the indications of those higher areas reflected in the toponyms or place names such as ''t Slot, den Donk, and Schoonewoerdse Heuvel. All of this took place in the Pleistocene. You can see those Pleistocene drifting sands protruding a meter or so above the peat polder landscape.
