The Krimpenerwaard is an area enclosed by the Hollandse IJssel, the Lek and the Vlist. 'Krimp' means river bend, and a 'waard' is a piece of land completely surrounded by rivers. There are several polders in the area. To the east is the Lopikerwaard, to the west the Zuidplaspolder. The area that is now called Krimpenerwaard is first mentioned in documents in 944.
