Buiten Verwachting is a corn mill. The mill was built in 1874 as a replacement for a burnt-down wooden mill. The mill was also used as a hulling mill until 1918. After falling into serious disrepair, the mill was thoroughly restored between 1981 and 1983. The current owner is the municipality of Middelburg.
The mill is equipped with three pairs of grinding stones. The sails are 23 meters long, the inner sail is fitted with the traditional Dutch framework with sails, and the outer sail with the Fokwiek system, also with sails. A voluntary miller operates the mill regularly.
