The 38 ''kubuswoningen'' or cube buildings near the Oude Haven were built between 1982 and 1984 by the Dutch architect Piet Blom. The idea was that the building got stuck on top of a pilar, allow extra space below. This inspiration was based on Le Corbusier. The buildings are also described as resembling huge dice. His bridge for pedestrians and the cube houses on top refers to the Ponte Vecchio in Florence.
