The beautiful Cruquius steam pumping station is one of the three main pumping stations that drained the lake of Haarlemmermeer. It is named after the cartographer and hydraulic engineer Nicolaas Samuelsz. Cruquius. In 1733 he drew up a design for the reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer. Although he did not build this pumping station himself, it was named after him because his plan was used as the basis for the final dry grinding. The building now also houses a museum.
