At the Beguinage, there is still a wooden house. In a medieval city where most houses were made of wood and the roofs were thatched, the fire hazard was high. This was the case in 1421, when a large fire broke out. It became even worse in 1452. The fire then reduced two-thirds of the city to ashes. Among other things, fourteen monasteries burned down. After these disastrous events, the city council decided in 1453 that house owners would have to clad their houses with bricks on the sides. Thatched roofs were completely banned; from then on, only slates or tiles were allowed. The city would start to 'stone'.
