Near Hakkelaarsberg Floris V was murdered on 23 June 1296. A tile in the bike path reminds you of this fact. He was murdered by Gijsbreght van Amstel and Herman van Woerden. The true reason for the conspiracy in 1296 probably lay in international politics. Floris V was traditionally an ally of King Edward of England. Nevertheless, Floris became dissatisfied with the support of the English king to the Count of Flanders concerning the Zeeland land west of the Oosterschelde, where much shipping and trade was concentrated. Floris even had indications that Edward played into the hands of Flemish interests. In January 1296 Floris therefore made a surprising alliance with Philip the Fair, king of France and the archenemy of the English. Philips could help to finally bring Zeeland west of the Scheldt under Dutch rule.
