When the Free University opened in 1880, it had no building of its own. The lectures were temporarily held in the Scottish Mission Church rented for a number of hours per week at (Binnen-)Amstel 56 - the current Kleine Komedie. With only five enrolled students and the knowledge that the exams had no recognition, it didn't amount to much, as graffiti avant la lettre with a quote from Dante on the doors of the Scottish Mission Church made clear: Lasciate ogni speranza voi ch''entrate (Abandon all hope, you who enter here). The first rector magnificus, the theologian Abraham Kuyper, who received his doctorate in Leiden, could say little else on the dies natalis of October 20, 1880, than that he was ''blushingly modest'' about the name of the university.
