Great panic in the small harbour town of Den Briel on 1 April 1572. "In the afternoon, around two o'clock, it turned out that there were twenty-six ships in the mouth of the Meuse. They were the Sea Beggars! Privateers, rough people. Prince William of Orange had given these people - who, by the way, did not care much about him - letters of privateering. According to him, this made them officially entitled to wage war against the Duke of Alba and his Spanish rule.
