On the site of the current Hof van Sonoy used to lie the Witte Hof or St. Mary Magdalene Cloister. The cloister came into the hands of the city in 1572, and the courtyard was then used to accommodate city dwellers who had become homeless because their houses were demolished for the construction of the new city defenses. After the siege, the Hof was sold to Diederik Sonoy, governor of the Noorderkwartier, who lived here for several years. Sonoy played a key role in the victory over the Spaniards in 1573. His name has remained associated with this place.
