The Drentsche Aa is the only stream in the Netherlands that has (largely) retained its original meandering course. Remarkably, the stream is only called the Drentsche Aa in Groningen. It is remarkable that the stream is led under the Noord-Willemskanaal with a sub-conductor.
Originally, the Aa flowed into the Hunze near Adorp. In 1385 the section of the Aa between Dorkwerd and Adorp was closed and a canal was dug from Dorkwerd to the Reitdiep, so that from that moment on the Aa discharged its water into the Lauwerszee. The old course is hardly recognizable due to silting.
