The Drentse Aa area is one of the best-preserved sandy soils areas in Europe. It is characterized by its es villages, its freely meandering streams along open pasture lands, and many riverbanks. The numerous burial mounds are one of the many relics of the past. The Drentse Aa area is located to the north of the owl bends of the Hondsrug.
The Drentsche Aa is the only brook in the Netherlands that has retained (largely) its original meandering course. Strikingly, the brook is only called the Drentsche Aa in Groningen. Remarkably, the brook is led under the North-Willem Canal through a culvert. Originally, the Aa flowed into the Hunze near Adorp. In 1385, the section of the Aa between Dorkwerd and Adorp was closed off, and a canal was dug from Dorkwerd to the Reitdiep, so that from that moment on, the Aa discharged its water into the Lauwers Sea. The old course is hardly recognizable due to silting.
