On August 25, 1818, Johannes van den Bosch laid the first stone for the first settlers' house on the wild lands of the municipality of Vledder in Southwest Drenthe. It was the realization of eighteenth-century Enlightenment ideas and nineteenth-century romantic dreams that drove Johannes van den Bosch. He observed in the years following the French period how poverty increased.
In November 1818, the first group of settlers arrived, consisting of 52 families with 100 adults and 230 children. The first colony was named Frederiksoord, after the patron Prince Frederik, the second son of King Willem I, colonel-general of the army, and known for his generosity.
