The Oranjekanaal runs from the Drentsche Hoofdvaart near Hoogersmilde to the Van Echterenkanaal near Klazienaveen. The 48 km long canal was constructed between 1853 and 1861 to provide access to the peat area west of Odoorn and the Bargervenen, east of Emmen. Additionally, the intention was to trade the boulders found during excavation. Unfortunately, not much could be earned from the boulders. Peat extraction also turned out to be unsuccessful due to drainage problems of the peat on the canal. In 1923, the canal was widened and deepened as part of a project for public works, but even in the following years, the canal remained unprofitable. The number of ships using the Oranjekanaal was rather disappointing.
