The name Brunssummerheide is used for an approximately 600-hectare nature reserve of the Society for Nature Conservation; this particularly refers to the so-called Schrieversheide. On the other hand, the name is also used for the approximately 1800-hectare recreational area in which this nature reserve is located. The 'Brunssummerheide' recreational area is in the province of Limburg, in the southeastern part of the municipality of Brunssum and adjacent municipalities Heerlen and Landgraaf. Recreational use includes activities such as walking, cycling, golfing, and horseback riding. There is also an observatory and the Landgraaf Brunssummerheide is located in the area, a defensive structure over a kilometer long.
