From the mid-19th century, most rice mills were established. Over the centuries, rice was imported, but it still had to be "polished" as people preferred white rice. Historically, there was a large rice milling industry in the Zaan region, which used wind power as an energy source. The presence of a good water connection was of great importance. Wormer was already a thriving trading place in the 16th and 17th centuries. Along the Zaan river, there were many windmills used for sawing wood, milling grain, pressing oil, and preparing paper. The raw materials and produced goods were stored in wooden warehouses that were directly connected to or located nearby the windmills. The provincial monuments Veerdijk 22, 23, and 24 are examples of this.
The Batavia warehouse houses a grand café.
