For us, the Maritime Museum rises like a castle from the water. The giant was built in 1656 as the Naval Warehouse or arsenal of the Admiralty, Amsterdam department. The design is by city architect Daniël Stalpaert: a monumental classical, symmetrical building in the square.
The Netherlands was still a republic of seven sovereign provinces (1581 – 1795) and the Navy was called the Admiralty, the military branch at sea. It was under the authority of the Stadtholder, the supreme commander, as far as there was one, and otherwise of the States General. The office of the Admiralty was located at the Oudezijds Voorburgwal in the Princenhof. Michiel de Ruyter, one of the admirals, must have regularly walked back and forth between there and here.
