Around 1000, the inhabitants of the north and west of the Netherlands began to venture into the 'wilderness' from their traditional living places. They left their terp or residential areas along rivers to make the higher peat bogs suitable for agriculture. Traces of this development can still be clearly seen around Kamerik, north of Woerden. What happened in Kamerik at that time took place everywhere in peat areas in North and West Netherlands. Farmers ventured into the peat areas to make them suitable for agriculture.
