Maurik is a village in the Dutch municipality of Buren, province of Gelderland. It is located in the Betuwe between Tiel and Wijk bij Duurstede. Until 1999, the locality formed a municipality with the villages of Eck en Wiel, Ravenswaaij, and Rijswijk, which merged into the municipality of Buren that year.
Nothing is known with certainty about the origin of the name Maurik. A.J. van der Aa writes in 1846 that Mannaricium, mentioned in the travel book of Emperor Antonius, would be present-day Maurik. However, he does not mention his source. A.P. de Kleuver goes even further in his occasional work from 1967 and assumes a Celtic origin.
The Sint-Maartenskerk is a church building in the Dutch village of Maurik, province of Gelderland. The church is used by the Reformed Congregation Maurik. It is unclear when a church was first mentioned in Maurik. Probably, the then church was destroyed in 1361 during the struggle with the Bronckhorsten. In 1395, the church appears in the list of churches of the Utrecht Dom. Hubert III of Culemborg bought the patronage rights of the church from Gerrit van Eck in 1397. The church had two vicarages: the Catharinavicaris from 1397 and the Antoniusvicaris from 1508.
