This village in the Neder-Betuwe belonged to the former municipality of Beusichem from 1811-1817, to the former municipality of Maurik from 1818-1998, and since 1999 to the municipality of Buren. The same place name also occurs in North Brabant and South Holland.
In 1915 and 1916, traces of a settlement from the 2nd century AD were found in the floodplains, the Essenbosch, possibly the Roman castellum Levefanum.
