Did you know that Dürer traveled to Zierikzee in 1520 to see and draw the washed-up “big fish”?
In his travelogue, Dürer notes that he travels from Antwerp to Zeeland after hearing that an enormous whale has washed ashore near Zierikzee.
He travels via Bergen op Zoom and arrives by ship in Arnemuiden; from there he continues to Zierikzee.
When he finally arrives in Zierikzee, the animal has already been pulled back into the sea by the tide, so he can no longer draw it.
