Oosterhout is a village in the municipality of Overbetuwe, which borders the district of the same name in the municipality of Nijmegen.
The village of Oosterhout originated in the early Middle Ages on a stream ridge, an old riverbank of the Waal. In 1809 and 1820 Oosterhout was hit by dike breaches, after which the current village center was rebuilt, this time in a northerly direction, at the level of the current village street.
Research has shown that it is one of the oldest inhabited areas in the Netherlands. In the late Stone Age there were already agricultural settlements. Many excavations from the Batavian and Roman times have been found. The low-lying, wet bowl areas were used as herb-rich hay meadows and as pastures.
In the fourteenth century, Notensteyn Castle was founded here by the lords Van Bronckhorst. In 1585 Notensteyn burned down and was rebuilt. In 1627 the castle went to the Van Hackfort family and was named after the village of Oosterhout. In history, the Waaldijk has broken through several times, wheels such as the Waaiensteinkolk still bear witness to this. In 1809 and 1820 the castle was destroyed by a dike breach. In the 17th century, tobacco cultivation came into vogue. In the second half of the 19th century, fruit cultivation in the Betuwe and therefore also in the original village of Oosterhout boomed. Many fields on the fertile stream ridges gave way to standard orchards. The church on the Dopstraat is more than a hundred years old and was built as a kind of escape hill at high tide.
