In the 15th century, "Blocksyl" was already being mentioned. In 1581, the town was fortified. Around 1600, Blokzijl received various privileges, such as the appointment of its own mayor. Blokzijl was under Spanish rule for a long time, and during that period, it prospered. The town was located on the Zuiderzee and was an important trading point. Blokzijl was granted city rights in 1672.
Today, it is a tourist town.
