Zuidhorn became the scene of a terrible persecution regarding homosexuality or sodomy in the 18th century. The then grietman De Mepsche, a kind of mayor, prosecuted a large number of people from the area and extracted confessions through torture. 22 death sentences were pronounced and carried out by strangulation during a public execution in Zuidhorn. Two individuals had already succumbed to torture on the rack. All 22 bodies were dishonorably burned instead of being buried. The youngest strangled boy was only fifteen. Two fourteen-year-old boys were considered minors but found guilty; they had to witness the executions and disappeared for the rest of their lives in reformatories.
