At a small bridge by the harbor, the Lady of Stavoren is waiting for you. Or is she gazing out over the water for one of her ships? The legend tells that she was a rich and possessive widow who sent a ship out to seek the most valuable treasure. The captain returned with a ship full of grain. She didn't like that and ordered the grain to be thrown overboard. Wheat was very precious at that time and she was scolded for this wastage, after which she threw a golden ring into the sea as an expression of her anger. 'As little as this ring returns from the sea, so little will I fall into beggary,' she exclaimed. Later, during a meal, when a fish was cut open and her ring was found in the entrails, she recognized the ring. That same evening, a great storm surge came, flooded her house and possessions, destroyed her fleet of ships, and caused her to die as a beggar. The harbor silted up, which also meant the end for Stavoren as an important port city.
